Eastern Mediterranean & Middle East Climate Change Initiative of the Cyprus Government

The Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate Change Initiative (EMME-CCI) of the Cyprus Government aims to coordinate and enhance the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME) region’s concerted response to the global climate emergency. The Initiative seeks to achieve this through the development and implementation of a science-based Regional Action Plan for ameliorating climate change impacts and challenges in the EMME region and advancing relevant mitigation actions in accordance with the Paris Agreement. The Action Plan will be based on recommendations from scientists with regional expertise working in dedicated Task Forces covering 13 thematic foci.

EMME-CCI was launched by H.E. President Anastasiades in March 2019. The announcement came following the 1st International Conference on Climate Change in the EMME, organized by the Cyprus Institute in 2018, which called on the governments of the region to take immediate action to address climate change. The Conference, attended by eminent scientists, policy-makers, and leaders of global stature from over 30 countries, highlighted the urgent need for coordinated climate action in the EMME.

Established in 2020 and based at the Cyprus Institute, the Center of Excellence focuses on addressing the risks associated with air pollution and climate change in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East region through a combination of research, innovation and education activities.
