PRE-CONFERENCE WORKSHOPS | 11 – 12 October 2021

The Conference will be preceded by two days of scientific workshops, focused on aspects of climate change and air pollution in the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East (EMME) region.

Through two full days of sessions, talks, and activities the workshops aim to bring together international scientific communities to discuss the latest concerning the science of climate change and air pollution, as well as related challenges, impacts and potential solutions for the EMME region.

The workshops are expected to attract a diverse group of renowned scientists and researchers from across Europe, the EMME region and beyond.

As such, the workshops will offer unique opportunities for networking and create a platform for identifying future collaborators and forming competitive consortia for national and international calls.

WHO IS IT FOR

Scientists, researchers, students and professionals actively engaged with research on aspects of climate change and air pollution in the EMME region.

TOPICS & THEMES

Climate and Atmosphere Research & Innovation: These sessions will focus on the latest developments in the climate and atmospheric sciences. More specifically on research and innovation activities focused on the EMME region.  These sessions are organized by the Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East Climate and Atmosphere Research Center (EMME-CARE). The EMME-CARE project established a regional Centre of Excellence (CoE) for climate and atmosphere research in EMME region, which has been identified as a global climate change “hot spot”. Based at the Cyprus Institute, EMME-CARE is supported by Advanced Partners: the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry (MPIC) in Germany, the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) and the University of Helsinki (UHEL).

This workshop is online only.

International Initiatives & Opportunities:  These sessions will concentrate on signposting and knowledge exchange on opportunities for collaboration, competitive calls and other relevant activities that can support the international community in working together more closely to address climate change impacts and challenges.

Climate Change Impacts & Solutions: These workshops will revolve around the findings of the Scientific Task Forces that the Cyprus Institute has been coordinating in the context of the Eastern Mediterranean & Middle East Climate Change Initiative (EMME-CCI) of the Cyprus Government. These workshops will take place in a hybrid format, online and at the Cyprus Institute Campus, in Nicosia, Cyprus. For more information, please contact climatechange2021@cyi.ac.cy

Workshop Topics include the following:

  • Climate change and weather extremes
  • Atmospheric Dust
  • Air pollution sources and impacts
  • Greenhouse Gases & Remote Sensing Observations
  • Atmosphere & Climate Modelling and Prediction
  • New Instrumentation and Research Infrastructure
  • International Networks and Regional initiatives
  • Education and Training Opportunities
